Crop rotation is a practice where you change what plants grow where in your garden. This can be helpful for many reasons, from reducing the spread of pests and diseases to keeping the soil nutrient-rich.

What is Crop Rotation?
Crop rotation isn't having your plants doing the hokey-pokey and turning around; it's when you physically change the growing location, usually over a 3–4 year period. Most pests, diseases, soil pathogens, and many other garden problems are very location-specific, and moving a few feet away into another garden bed, or the other end of the garden, can be enough to significantly reduce their spread.
While the science behind crop rotation can get very dense, a great way to start is to focus on plant families. Plant families share many of the same issues and pull similar nutrients out of the soil. Structuring your rotation around these groups is an easy way to set you up for success.
Why Rotate Crops?
We briefly touched on how crop rotation can reduce the spread of diseases. The science behind this is microbes and pathogens in the soil. Many bacteria, fungi, and other plant pathogens are host-specific, meaning they only infect a particular plant species or a relatively small group of related plants. By switching to a different plant family, you can make the soil less favorable for those pathogens to persist and spread.
The same is true for some pests. Many pests will overwinter in areas where their preferred crop has grown. By switching where that crop is grown, you can make it harder for pests to find their preferred host when they emerge the following season.
Rotating crops can also help manage the nutrients in your soil. Different plants have different nutrient requirements, with some crops being particularly demanding and others requiring relatively little. Legumes can also contribute nitrogen to the soil when they form associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
Crop rotation does not replace compost or fertilizer, but varying what you grow in each area can help prevent the same nutrients from being repeatedly drawn from the same soil.

Plant Families
Some family groupings have plants that don't seem alike — take potatoes and peppers, which are both members of the nightshade family. Here's a breakdown of the main family groupings and some common examples:
- Alliums: onions, leeks, garlic, and chives
- Brassicas: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, and collard greens
- Cucurbits: cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and gourds
- Goosefoot / Amaranth: beets, Swiss chard, and spinach
- Grass/grains: wheat, corn, oats, and rice
- Legumes: beans, peas, and lentils
- Nightshades: eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers
- Umbellifers: carrots, parsnips, fennel, and dill
As with most rules, there are exceptions. Some plants are perennials and need time to get established, so they should not be rotated each year. Plants like garlic and asparagus should be left to mature in place rather than being treated like annual crops, and plants like raspberries will need to be in one bed for a long time.
Planning a Rotation

A Simple Rotation
There is no single perfect crop rotation, and your rotation will depend on the crops you grow and the space available in your garden. For a simple starting point, divide your crops into broad groups based on their plant families and rotate those groups through your growing areas.
For example, if you have four garden beds, you could use a four-year rotation:

- Bed 1: Nightshades

- Bed 4: Alliums

In this rotation, legumes precede nightshades in every bed — legumes fix nitrogen in the soil, which hungry nightshade crops benefit from. Brassicas follow nightshades, giving the soil time to recover before another heavy feeder returns. Alliums precede brassicas, as they have few shared pest and disease issues and help break any buildup in the soil. The cycle then resets with legumes following alliums, keeping the rotation balanced across all four beds.
This doesn't need to be followed exactly. The important part is avoiding planting the same family in the same location year after year. You can adjust the groups and order to suit the crops you actually grow.
Crop Rotation in a Small Garden
You don't need four large garden beds to practice crop rotation. If you only have one or two beds, you can still move crops around as much as your space allows. Even a simple system of avoiding the same family in the same spot every year can be useful. Containers can also be rotated using the same principles.
Rotation is also not an all-or-nothing practice. You may not have enough space to move every crop, and some crops may have to remain in place. Do what you can with the space available and combine rotation with other good gardening practices, such as removing diseased plant material, maintaining healthy soil, and choosing appropriate varieties.
When You Can't Rotate Crops
Not every garden has enough space to move crops around each year, but that doesn't mean your plants and garden won't be healthy.
Regularly adding compost, leaf mold, and organic mulch can help maintain soil structure, moisture, and biological activity. Removing diseased plant material at the end of the season and avoiding planting visibly diseased plants back into the same area can also reduce problems.
You can also prioritize pest- and disease-resistant varieties when choosing what to grow. While resistant varieties aren't immune to every problem, they can be less susceptible to common pests and diseases and may perform better when growing the same crop in the same location.
