Lisianthus

Eustoma grandiflorum

Category: Flowers

Ruffly, luxe lisianthus blooms set the standard for event and market bouquets. Lisianthus offers excellent vase life and reliable blooms in white, lavender/purple, peach, pinks, and picotees (edged with color). Lisianthus are grouped into 4 harvest periods: planting different series will result in a longer picking season. Lisi's are finicky but well worth the effort to grow them. Group 4 varieties like Croma are grown in year-round temperate climates.

Growing from Seed

Light is needed for germination. A thin layer of vermiculite will cut down on algae growth. Seeds come pelleted. Keep uniformly moist.

Planting Considerations

Lisianthus seedlings are slow growers, so be patient! Lisianthus does exceptionally well in a greenhouse or tunnel. Horizontal netting is highly recommended.

Feeding

Although not necessary, you can add calcium nitrate while growing and low nitrogen/high phosphorus fertilizer when blooming.

Harvesting

Pick when one or more flowers are open. Pinching the first bloom (use in bud vase!) results in more uniform sets of blooms.

Storage

Store in a cooler.
